Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an amazingly effective healing modality. A mind-body, energy psychology tool, it is one of the simplest and fastest ways to apply healing to almost any kind of trauma, whether it be yesterday or 50 years ago. It also works incredibly well on a wide variety of emotional and mental issues and physical ailments. Easy to apply, non-invasive and gentle, it has been called many names – acupressure without needles, tearless trauma, meridian tapping, and mostly just plain tapping.
It involves tapping on various pressure points on the body. It needs no medication or pills of any sort, nor any tools – only your fingers and your intention. In its simplest form it can be done by anybody and virtually anywhere. And there are no side effects!
How Does It Work?
Essentially, in two ways:
- by working with the brain
- by working with the meridians in the subtle body
Stress and the Brain
Possibly the worst curse of modern life is stress and anxiety – we don’t know how to switch off.
Some amount of stress is normal and even necessary to us, but the trouble is in the modern world the situation has got completely out of hand. We are bombarded on every side by unnatural pressure, information overload, stress triggers our ancestors would never have dreamed of.
When we are under threat or sense danger, the old, ‘reptilian’ part of the brain, called the amygdala, takes over and we go automatically into ‘fight or flight’ mode. Once upon a time, this was essential for our survival as a species. But the threats we have to deal with in the modern world don’t allow for quick resolution as they did our ancestors. As a result we are on constant ‘low grade’ stress, like being in neutral with our foot on the accelerator.
Stress released hormones into the body, raises our heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, cortisol, insulin and adrenaline levels, and inhibits other vital functions like our digestive and immune systems from doing their work properly. Little wonder modern-day constant stress is the major contributor to virtually every disease, including obesity and diabetes.
The Good News
The good news is that EFT calms the amygdala and releases endorphins (our natural feel-good hormones) that calm our nerves. It acts like a ‘pattern interrupt’ that re-educates the amygdala about the nature of the ‘threat’ and allows the brain to deal with it and process it in a non-stressful way.
The meridians are part of our subtle body anatomy act as conduits for Prana or Life Energy throughout our system. Acupuncture and acupressure make use of these conduits and of the pressure points that lie along them like amplifiers.
During an EFT session we simply tap on a number of these key points, using the first two or three fingers as desired. The points can be seen in the diagrams on this page. Each of these points is a key one on the line of at least one of the major meridians. By tapping in this way we affect the energy as it flows through that point and allow it to flow freely once again. Think of a flowing river in which you place a large rock, and of how the water would be diverted and interrupted. By using EFT we simply remove the rock.
So What Do You Do?
EFT sounds odd at first encounter and looks rather odd to do, but bear with it!
The basic formula is very easy. Let’s say we are tapping for a headache. First we need to express the problem in what is known as a ‘set-up phrase’. This might be:
‘Even though I have this headache, I deeply and sincerely love and accept myself’.
There are several key words here. Saying ‘Even though’ releases us from resistance and blockages, like guilt, shame, anxiety or resentment because we are less than perfect. In EFT we learn to accept ourselves as the wonderful beings we are even with all our shortcomings intact. We then reinforce this with the words, ‘I deeply and sincerely love and accept myself’. In other words, you are OK no matter what!
As you say these words, tap the ‘karate point’ on the side of the hand between little finger and wrist, as in the diagram, as you repeat the words three times.
Now tap briskly on each point in turn using a ‘reminder phrase’, for example:
For convenience start at the inner corner of the eye and work downwards, though the beauty of EFT is it doesn’t really matter which order you use or even if you forget a point or two. Tap with either hand, or both, on one side of the body, or both. EFT really is the kindest, most hassle-free and easiest way of healing!
So the sequence runs:
inner corner of eye ‘this headache’
outer corner of eye ‘this headache’
under eye ‘this headache’
under nose ‘this headache’
under chin ‘this headache’
collarbone ‘this headache’
under arm ‘this headache’
top of head ‘this headache’
Do 2 rounds and take a deep breath. See how you feel, and if necessary go round again. Effects make take a short time, though I have frequently known minor ailments like headaches to be gone before I’ve even finished the first round!
Try it for yourself. I think you’ll be amazed. EFT founder Gary Craig said, “Tap for everything”, and you really can. This is one healing modality that can never do any harm or have any side effects.
It’s a great self help tool, which can also produce amazing results on much more serious conditions both physical and psychological, often when nothing else has worked.
Try this most basic form of tapping for yourself!
